It is a great honour for me to be present at the launch of Lakshmi Menon’s book – The Second Choice.

I had the privilege of having Lakshmi’s book of children’s stories (Tinky’s Best Gift)  published by Paulin Publishers, released in my house in 2003.  The book sold out within a few months. I also had the privilege of publishing three of her stories in an anthology titled Bhelpuri. Her stories were much appreciated for their relevant themes and heart warming content.

For many years, Lakshmi contributed articles and stories to Deccan Herald. She had a fan following of readers who admired her work. Lakshmi is one of those rare writers who is bilingual.  She has been equally successful in the Malayalam language.

The story of The Second Choice centres around the marriage of a man and woman for whom this is a second marriage. Each of them has a daughter by the previous marriage.  The plot weaves the complexcities of their tangled relationship and adjustments. At the end there is a twist in the tale  which leads to major decisions, and changed lives for the characters.

This is a mature theme, which has been handled with skill and delicacy.  The people involved become a part of our lives.  The book deserves a wide readership.
